Founded by John Barbour as J Barbour & Sons in 1894 in 5 Market Place, South Shields Barbour clothing started out as a shop making outerwear, boiler suits, protective coats, painter’s jackets, underwear and other garments for the growing community of sailors, fishermen and dock and shipyard workers in the area. Letting his sons join the family business the clothing soon expanded to landowners, farmers, farm workers and shepherds.
